To Whom It May Concern,
I am writing in response to your contact regarding the debt referenced above. I am exercising my federal consumer rights to formally dispute this claim and demand proof of its validity.
Under the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA), 15 U.S.C. § 1692g, you are required to cease collection activities until you provide written validation containing the following documentation:
- Verification of the exact amount of the alleged debt, including an itemization of all interest charges, collection costs, and fees added.
- The name and physical address of the original creditor for this account.
- Verification showing that you have the legal license or purchase agreement authorizing you to collect this debt in my home state.
- A copy of the original agreement, contract, or credit application showing my signature.
Because I reside in Texas, this collection activity is also subject to the Texas Finance Code Chapter 392. Under Texas law, debt collection regulations apply to both third-party collectors and original creditors.
You must cease collection activities and respond within 30 days of receiving this request.
Furthermore, please cease all telephone contact with me regarding this account. Under federal law, I request that you communicate solely via written mail to preserve a paper record of these contacts.
Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.
Why These Two Terms Mean the Same Thing
Collectors use different words for the same thing. Whether the agency representative called it a debt verification letter or a validation notice, your legal response is identical.
Under Section 809(b) of the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA), if a consumer notifies the debt collector in writing within the thirty-day period that the debt is disputed, the debt collector must cease collection of the debt until verification of the debt is obtained.
Real-Life Example
Say Carlos received a letter stating 'Contact us for debt verification.' Instead of calling their automated payment line, Carlos generated this verification template and sent it via USPS Certified Mail. Because the collector could not prove the chain of custody from the original credit card issuer, they canceled the collection account.

2. Print the document and sign your name above the signature line.
3. Mail it to the collection agency's physical address via USPS Certified Mail with Return Receipt Requested.
4. Keep the stamped postal receipt and tracking number in your records.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I use 'verification' or 'validation' in my letter?
Both terms are legally recognized and reference 15 U.S.C. § 1692g. Our template references both terms to ensure full statutory compliance.
Does the letter title affect its legal validity?
No. The legal validity depends on the substance of the dispute, the statutory references cited, and proof that it was mailed via Certified Mail within 30 days.
What if I already paid the debt — can I still request verification?
If you believe an account was paid or settled and a collection agency is still attempting to collect, you can demand verification and submit copies of your cancelled checks or settlement letter.
